Before any of this I was a fashion photographer. I shot Brighton Fashion Week and London Fashion Week, and in 2006 and 2007 I was the youngest judge and official photographer of Miss England, across thirty-five cities and on to Miss World.<\/p>
That meant two years very close to couture millinery: wide brims, feathers, netting, sculptural things balanced on a head for one evening and never worn again. I photographed hundreds of them before it occurred to me to paint one.<\/p>
On 22 October 2016, at twenty-five past two in the morning, I finished it. A woman in an enormous hat, a snake curling out of the brim, her mouth wide open. Black ink, no colour. I looked at it and thought it would look good on a t-shirt. There was no business plan.<\/p>
I flooded colour in behind the ink so it would carry on fabric, and that became the method: a monochrome figure, one colour behind it. Ink On Red is that idea at its simplest.<\/p>
I printed, packed and posted everything myself until covid closed the printers and the suppliers stopped answering. Rather than take money for things I couldn\u2019t make, I shut it down. It stayed shut for two years. I never stopped drawing.<\/p>

Ten years on, it\u2019s built differently. Nothing is made until someone orders it, so there\u2019s no warehouse of unsold stock waiting to become landfill. Clothing is printed in the UK on certified organic cotton in a factory running on renewable energy. Prints are gicl\u00e9e on fine art paper.
